Sport and activity grants up for grabs

Groups in Mayo are being urged to apply for a €25,000 grant, which is to be awarded to five innovative sport and activity programmes across the country.

€360,000 for discovery points in Mayo

Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring this week announced €3.2m funding for the next phase of the Wild Atlantic Way development. As part of the overall funding package €360,000 has been allocated to Mayo for works on 24 discovery points and four embarkation points along the route.

North Mayo to get a greenway along the Moy

There was good news for the north Mayo area with the announcement yesterday of an allocation of €250,000 seed money to begin construction on a 14 km greenway from Ballina to Killala along the River Moy. The greenway will incorporate an off road cycle track and walk and will incorporate a number of monasteries along the river. It is envisioned that this 14km stretch will be the first phase of a multi-phase greenway in the larger north Mayo area.

Belmullet gets €6 million for sewerage scheme

The news that the long awaited Belmullet sewerage scheme has been given €6 million funding was welcomed this week. Local Fine Gael councillor Gerry Coyle said that while there has been some concern expressed by local residents and fishermen in relation to the location of the proposed plant and outflow pipe, he believes the new modern plant should allay some of these concerns. He said this week: “Belmullet is a modern and vibrant town and it deserves all the investment it can get towards improving its infrastructure so that that it can progress into the future.” Councillor Coyle thanked Taoiseach Enda Kenny, Minister Michael Ring, and Minister Phil Hogan for their commitment to the project. He said that both himself and Minister Ring had worked tirelessly on behalf of the community to have the scheme delivered.

Mayo County Council has launched a new community tourism initiative for the Diaspora which seeks to build on the legacy of The Gathering 2013. The Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring, officially launched the initiative, a joint partnership by Fáilte Ireland, IPB Insurance, and the 34 local authorities, to provide an annual fund of €1m over the next three years to support up to 700 local community-based events each year around the country. Mayo County Council will provide €30,000 over the next three years for this purpose.

Westport the big winner in festival funding announcement

A boutique food and music festival, choral celebrations, a recreation of Humbert’s 1798 invasion, and a kitesurfing lake battle are some of the local festival events which will benefit this year from €49,000 announced in grant funding.

Thirty-one empty social houses to be renovated in Mayo

Mayo has received an allocation of €320,000 for works on social housing that will see 31 social housing units in the county be renovated and brought up to standard.
